Cabinets get designed to look full in a showroom rather than to hold what a household actually owns, and the shortfall only shows up once everything has to live somewhere. Detailed storage planning — working out what needs to be within reach, what can be stored out of sight, and how often each thing is actually used — is what decides whether a layout works once it is built.
The finishes follow from that plan rather than leading it. Countertops, tile and hardware are chosen for how the room is really used — a family kitchen and a kitchen that hosts constantly do not need the same surface, and matching a layout to its materials is what makes the finished room feel resolved rather than assembled.
